Apple Mail: Status column can display unread count...
If you use the threading view in Mail (View > Organize by Thread), you can change the width of the status column to show the number of unread items in a thread. This column also displays other icons next to individual messages to denote when you have replied or forwarded them. (via Finer Things in Mac)
